HAPPY
CHRISTMAS & A HEALTHY, HAPPY 2007 TO YOU ALL.
AGM
At
the last AGM we welcomed Lyn Newman to our Committee: That
night 29 people were present.
Clive Grove told us
about his trip of a lifetime to the
Himalayas
. We watched some fantastic pictures and Clive gave a very
interesting commentary. Clive, his son and daughter went on
the hike to raise funds for the charity of the Sarah
Matheson Trust.
The
Rotary Social Event on the 24th October was
attended by Anjie, Terry, Hughie and I. It was the annual
distribution of money to clubs and societies.
.
Race Night
SATURDAY November 4th we
organized a Race Night. The evening was well attended, about
70 people were present. The Race organisers presented us
with some great races and we found ourselves encouraging the
horses, the races having taken place eariier all over the
world. Brian sold tickets. Several punters did very well.
All in all everyone had a great time. The raffle was
organised by myself that night. Compliments to the
refurbishment of the British Legion Hall, a great
improvement.
Members Meetings
Our first members meeting took place Wednesday 11th
October. 15 People were present. Winifred Treasure
entertained us by recalling experiences during their stay in
Jamaica
in the 50ties and 60ties. Winifred brought articles to
show. Her talk was very interesting. Afterwards we had a
glass of the wine our German visitors brought over for us in
September. The Band Hall is a very pleasant hall, good for
small amounts of people
Our
2nd members meeting took place Wednesday, 9 November. This
time 26 people were present. Speakers for the Don Me Math
Foundation talked to us about their work in
Gambia
. The work they have done to build a school with, at the
moment, 6 classrooms for 180 children in total is
extraordinary. Starting from scratch, with the help of
parents armed with machetes, a field donated by the Gambian
government, was cleared of scrub. Bricks were made on site,
local material and workers were used. Cloth bought locally
was turned into uniforms, again giving work to Gambian
women. They are in the process of building 4 more
classrooms. Children are taught by local teachers.
Sponsorships and donations have paid and are continuing to
pay for this project.
