As I write this there are two interesting developments on the cards. Taken chronologically, the first of these is a new initiative from Liederbach to encourage schoolchildren aged between 9 and 11 years to paint any subject on the theme of “Europe”, with the object being for pictures from all of Liederbach’s twin towns exhibited on a rolling basis in each of those towns. The twist in the tail is they have asked the mayor of each town to contribute too! I have asked the head teacher at Emmanuel if they wish to participate. I sincerely hope they do

The second initiative is a request from Champtoceaux, asking whether we would be able to accommodate a number of young musicians from their local music school on the visit next May. This ties in quite nicely with the request we had at the AGM for the Concert Brass to play in Champtoceaux as part of their 150th anniversary celebrations in 2014. I am currently discussing with my counterpart in Champtoceaux to see if we can in some way link the two requests.

On the home front, the autumn season of Members’ meetings is going ahead and there is news later in this newsletter about our Christmas celebration.

Finally, I wish all of our members a very happy Christmas and a healthy and prosperous New Year.

======

Members’ meetings. The new season of Members’ Meetings started in September with a talk by Mike Colbourne from Monkey World. The October meeting featured Colin Russell talking about his experiences as a Customs Officer. Both talks were thoroughly enjoyed by all. I am writing this on the afternoon of the November meeting and looking forward to hearing from Joanne Grove from P&O Cruises. Having to vary the day of the week that we hold our meetings on has had one beneficial effect in that some members who are never able to come on a Wednesday have been able to join us at the Thursday meetings So remember to keep a close eye on your new yellow 2012-13 membership cards to keep up with these changes.

======

Members’ Christmas Party

This year’s Christmas celebrations
will be held on 12th December in
St Michael’s Parish Rooms, starting at 8pm.

You are welcome to bring your own bottle but we will be providing a glass of something seasonal and snacks.

Live entertainment and another session of
Quizgo will get you into the party spirit.

There will be no entry charge for members but please be prepared to buy raffle tickets.

The AGM was exceptionally well attended this year. Despite this, the formal business was conducted in record time and we were able to settle for the evening with a glass of wine and a Quizgo competition with (chocolate) Cash prizes!

Unfortunately, no-one was found willing and able to stand as vice-Chairman. This is a great disappointment as I am hoping to be able to acclimatise someone to the wide variety of jobs involved so that they can take over the Chair from me next year.

Please note I WILL be retiring from the Chair next year, so if anyone would like to talk to me about what is involved please don’t hold back. I don’t want to leave a rudderless ship.

======

Forthcoming events:

30th November - 2nd December: Our annual autumn long weekend foray across the channel to Arras is fully booked. Keep an eye out for details of next year’s trip and book early!

23 March 2013. We are planning a Caribbean themed evening at the Memorial Hall, complete with steel band. Ticket prices and details are not yet available but make a note in your next-year’s diaries now to keep the date free.

8 - 13 May 2013. Visit from our friends from Champtoceaux. Let Joyce know as soon as possible if you are willing to host. We may be looking to accommodate a larger than usual number of visitors this year (see my ramblings above)

14 - 17 June 1013. Visit to Liederbach, including their International Strassenfest. If you are interested in going on this trip (and we need to know numbers in order to find the most economical way of getting there) please get in touch with Ian as soon as possible.

Subscriptions. If you haven’t renewed your subscription yet there’s still time - just. You can pay John at any members’ meeting or get your £5 to any committee member. If you lapse your membership, this will probably be the last newsletter you will receive.

======

At the naming ceremony for Taunus Way this summer, our visitors and hosts took some time out for a group photo by the sign for the adjoining Liederbach Drive.

======

A reminder that all calls within the 01202 area should now be dialled with the full std code and number.

What a strange summer we’ve been having. My own holiday in France in June this year saw very unsettled weather, even as far south as the Dordogne. However, on our return home we learned that it had been even worse here and at least the rain in France was warmer!

While I was away I missed the Verwood Jubilee celebrations and our Companion Dog Show. The reports on these event in this newsletter come from those who were around for them.

It was a relief to find that the vandalism to our fingerpost on Ferret Green caused minimal damage and the missing arms were recovered from nearby bushes. I have now cleaned up the arms and I await Dorset County Council’s team coming to re-erect them. If it gets too close to the visit from Liederbach, I have obtained some nuts and bolts and will put them up again myself!

As I write this we are eagerly awaiting the arrival of our guests from Liedebach and hoping that the gods that allowed the weather to cheer up for the Olympics will take similar pity on us and give our guests a fine weekend. As we will be running Café René at the Rustic Fayre too, that’s a double reason for hoping for good weather. Don’t forget to come and visit us there.

One final plea. If you are on email and are still receiving this newsletter on paper, please would you let me have your email address so we can get it to you cheaper and quicker. Just email your address to twinning@verwood.org and I’ll do the rest.

======

Members’ meetings. The new season of Members’ Meetings will start a month earlier and on a different day than usual, on Thursday 13th September at 7.30pm in St Michael’s Parish Centre. Our speaker will be Mike Colbourne from Monkey World. The day of the week will revert to Wednesday for our October meeting, which will be on the 10th - starting at 8.00pm. We have a very interesting talk (I have heard him before) from Colin Russell on his experiences as a Customs Officer. The November meeting will be on Wednesday 14th starting at 8pm, with a talk from Joanne Grove from P&O Cruises. You will need to keep a close eye on your new yellow 2012-13 membership cards as the availability of the hall has meant that we have had to vary the days and times of meetings slightly.

======

The Town Council Fun Day to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee turned out to be a very enjoyable day with the weather taking pity on us for the day. At one stage trade at our wine bar was a little slow so Joyce and Linda took the wine to the people instead of waiting for the people to come to the wine! As a result of the day’s trading our funds benefitted and we were able to make a donation to the Mayor’s charity fund.

======

The Companion Dog Show was, as usual, a great success. Entries were a little down on last year, but this can be put down to the less than perfect weather on the day. Nevertheless it proved a big attraction for both the town and for “doggy” people from far and wide and once again we are indebted to Audrey and David for their usual flawless organisation.

======

Forthcoming events. Depending on when you receive this newsletter there may still be time for you to join us on our evening Mystery Coach Tour on 1st September. The coach leaves at 5.30pm from Morrisons Car Park. Phone Brian on 822299 to see if you can still get in!

  • 30th November - 2nd December: Our annual autumn long weekend foray across the channel to Arras is fully booked. If you are interested and would like to check if there has been any cancellations, call Terry on 822959.

  • 23 March 2013. We are planning a Carribean Themed evening at the Memorial Hall, complete with steel band. Ticket prices and details are not yet available but make a note in your next-year’s diaries now to keep the date free.

  • 8 - 13 May 2013 (Provisional). Visit from our friends from Champtoceaux.

Notice of 31st Annual General Meeting

This year’s AGM will be held at 7.30pm on Thursday 25th October
 in the Town Council Chamber, Vicarage Road
.

Please let the secretary have nominations for anyone willing to join the committee by 18th October.

Formal business will be followed by light refreshments and a fun quiz

======

Subscriptions. It’s that time of year again! Subscriptions for 2012/13 are now due and for the 6th year running they have been held at £5. You can pay at Cafe Rene, our AGM, the September or October Members’ meeting or you can give it to any Committee member. In exchange you will receive a brand new bright yellow membership card. Not much has stayed the same price since 2006 so take advantage while stocks last!

Hello again. Well, the weather this year just doesn’t know what to do, does it? Easter seemed to mark the end of the warm dry spring weather and since then we seem to have had probably the wettest drought ever! Luckily the weather did cheer up for the weekend of the inaugural Twinning camping weekend and, whilst the chilly wind persisted, we were able to entertain some visitors on the Sunday afternoon.

======

Members’ meetings. The March meeting - the last of the 2011/12 season - was very well attended. The attraction was the Woofability dogs - especially the puppy who made a “star guest” appearance! The 2012/13 season of meetings will be starting one month earlier than usual, on THURSDAY 13th September, and we are currently working on getting a varied selection of speakers to entertain and inform us. These meetings will continue to be held in St Michael’s Parish Rooms, starting at 8pm.

======

he music evening held on 17th March was another successful venture. Well over 60 people gathered in the Memorial Hall for an evening of assorted styles of music from Dorset band Fippeny Piece. Everyone I have spoken to has said how much they enjoyed themselves so this is another one to bear in mind for repeating in the future.

======

The proposed caravan and motor home long-weekend went ahead on 12th - 16th April at East Creech Farm campsite. This was a beautiful venue offering splendid walking country and a superb view from the site across Poole Harbour to Poole and Bournemouth. As I said in my introduction, the weather managed to cheer itself up for the long weekend. A pity that Joyce, who organised the event for us, was unable to attend as she injured her foot (again) the weekend before, but at least she managed to visit us with some others on the Sunday afternoon.

With nothing firm planned this turned out to be a very informal and sociable event enjoyed by everyone. We will be doing another - probably midweek in late September - at a different venue but still probably in the Purbecks. So those of you with tents, campervans or caravans who missed out this time - do try to join us for all or part of the break.

======

The boules practice season started on 3rd May - or would have done if the pitch had not been flooded!. Every fine Thursday evening you will find us at the boules piste in  Verwood Memorial Recreation Ground from 6pm onwards. Beginners are especially welcome and we do have some boules you can borrow if you don’t have your own. The future of the Dorset league is in the balance at present, so we may be issuing friendly challenges to other local organisations during the course of the summer.

======

Forthcoming events. Please note the following upcoming events in your diary and come along to support us:

  • Monday 4th June: Verwood Town Council’s fête to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee on Ferrett Green and the Memorial Recreation Ground. We will be running a wine bar from a pitch on Ferrett Green serving French and German wines.

  • Saturday 9th June: Our annual Companion Dog Show will be held from 10 am in the Memorial Hall and on the Recreation Ground. Come along and support us - light refreshments will be available and you don’t need a dog in order to watch whilst enjoying one of our renowned BLT sandwiches!

  • 30th November - 2nd December: Our annual autumn long weekend foray across the channel. This year we are visiting Arras, staying at the 3* Holiday Inn Express in the centre of the town. Also included are guided tours of Wellington Quarry - the network of tunnels beneath the town - and the WWI trenches and Canadian Memorial at Vimy Ridge. Finally, our visit co-incides with the start of the Arras Christmas Markets - the biggest in Northern France. Cost of the weekend is £175 including all coach and ferry travel, bed and buffet breakfast and gratuities. At the time of writing there are just 2 places left, so call Terry on 822959 very soon if you would like to book.

======

Preparations are virtually complete for the the visit from our Liederbach friends over the August Bank Holiday weekend, 24th - 28th August. It looks as though 36 Liederbachers will be coming over and we do now have sufficient new hosts for those who have not been before. The programme will include visits to the Hall and Woodhouse brewery at Blandford St Mary and RNLI at Poole. These are planned for visitors only but if hosts would like to join in this may be possible. Please let us know soon if you do wish to come as places have to be booked in advance.

We have put in a bid to have a previously unnamed road leading to Liederbach Drive in Verwood named Taunus Way in honour of our 20th anniversary. East Dorset District Council is considering this proposal and we hope to have their decision in a few weeks. If we are successful we hope to have a naming ceremony on the Sunday of the Liederbachers’ visit.

======

Don’t forget that Julie can always make use of any new, high-quality goods you have no need of (such as unwanted presents) that would make suitable raffle prizes. We also have an urgent need for new goods as tombola prizes or used goods for the table top sale at the Dog Show.

Also, Catharina can always recycle your old greetings cards into new ones to sell for our funds.

The big shock of the winter so far  was the sudden closure over the Christmas period of Club31. Not only has this taken away the best meeting venue in Verwood but it lost us  our “home” for Members’ meetings. Some rapid phoning around by Lin found us St Michael’s Parish Rooms for the January, February and March meetings. This buys us some time to find a permanent (if anything can be said to be permanent) home for next season’s meetings. This may require a change of day so we must be prepared for this. Watch this space for futher developments.

 Things have gone a little quieter since our Christmas “do” but behind the scenes much has been happening to prepare for the year ahead. Details inside this issue.

Subscriptions for 2011/12 are now overdue. If you haven’t had your new green membership card it’s probable that you haven’t paid yet. It only costs £5 per household so please get in touch with your newsletter deliverer or, if you get this by email, John Pettitt (number overleaf) to renew. Members’ meetings. Our December celebration was again well attended and enjoyed by all. Thanks to Ieuan Davies for stepping in at short notice and proving that the Welsh really can sing! An excellent buffet supper provided by the Club was followed by Terry’s traditional Christmas Quizgo. With the bar open for drinks everyone left fortified and in the festive mood. Such a same we won’t be able to do this in quite the same way again.

January’s meeting was very well attended - unusually so for a January meeting: perhaps because the second Wednesday fell little later in the month than usual. We had a very interesting talk by Janet Townsend on the Jubilee Sailing Trust followed by a lively question and answer session over tea and biscuits.

February’s meeting was equally well attended. We had a thought-provoking presentation about Julia’s house, which included a short video by Martin Clunes. I think changing the format of our meetings to include tea and coffee after the talk affords more time for informal chats with the speaker and among ourselves; so we’ll stick with that for the March meeting too.

The March meeting will be on the 14th in St Michael’s Parish Rooms, starting at 8pm. Please note the later starting time as the hall is booked by someone else until 7.30. Our subject for this, the last meeting of the season, is Woofability and is an opportunity to meet the wonderful dogs and get acquainted with the work they do.

======

Our second annual skittles evening was held on 19th January at Horton Village Hall. This was another very successful evening, with tickets sold out and and excellent jacket potato supper provided by the ladies, not forgetting John’s bread pudding for dessert. The skittles competition, organised by Dave, was great fun, the eventual winners being Verna Jones for the ladies and John Stone for the men.

======

As announced in the last newsletter, we will be holding a music and dance evening on 17th March in the Memorial Hall. Live music for listening to and dancing to will be provided by Dorset based band Fippenny Piece. This is a bring your own drinks and nibbles event although teas and coffees will be provided. You should already have seen posters advertising the evening around the town. Tickets, priced £7, are available from Ian on 821280.

======

Advance notices. Please note the following upcoming events in your diary and come along to support us:

 Monday 4th June: Verwood Town Council’s fête to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubillee on Ferrett Green and the Memorial Recreation Ground. We hope to be running a wine bar marquee there to help get everyone into the mood for a celebration.

 Saturday 9th June: Our annual Companion Dog Show held from 10 am in the Memorial Hall and on the Recreation Ground. Come along and support us - light refreshments will be available and you don’t need a dog in order to enjoy one of our renowned BLT sandwiches!

Plans are now well advanced for the visit from our Liederbach friends over the August Bank Holiday weekend, 24th - 28th August. We need to know who is willing to host for this visit, so please give John a call on 868763 to let him know how many you can accommodate.. If you prefer email his address is john@blackwellsurveys.co.uk

======

A reminder that we hope to hold a caravan and motor home long-weekend rally in the spring. The proposed dates are 13th - 15th April and a venue in the Purbecks has been suggested. We need to know numbers, so if you would be interested in joining in, please let Joyce know on 824469.
