Christmas Party on Friday 11 December at St Michael Parish Church
commencing at 7.30
We are
imposing a small charge of £3 this year as fund raising has been
adversely affected by the weather. The good news is it is still a
bargain as it includes festive entertainment, nibbles and fun.
27-29
November – Bruges Christmas Markets
Staying at
a 4* hotel which is a former 17th century monastery in the
heart of Bruges. The cost is £180 for 2-nights for accommodation,
including breakfast plus coach travel via the Eurotunnel. This trip is

There is a lot of fun to be had and friends to be made so do not
delay.
Previous
Events
Members’
Meetings
We were
treated to some very interesting and informative speakers. A couple
attended a wedding in Australia and decided to get married themselves
in secret. A friendship developed with their wedding official and they
were asked to house sit for him. He recommended them to friends who
recommended them to friends and so on for many years.
A former
resident of South Africa showed us some beautiful scenic photographs
on screen. She had participated in a photographic wilderness trip and
shared her experiences with us. She now lives in the UK and when asked
“Why” she replied that it is due to the lack of employment for
white middle aged women plus of course the violent crimes in some
areas.
Bush Farm
Bison Centre, Wiltshire set in acres of woodland is worth a visit; it
boasts red deer, elk and other animals as well as bison. These
impressive creatures are steeped in North American history from
roaming in abundance to being almost extinct in the late 1800’s.
There is a display of North American art at the farm as well as an
organic meat shop.
Royal
Ascot Ladies’ Day
This day
at the races proved to be most successful; the weather was warm and
sunny which helped make it a very enjoyable experience for all. Hats
were the order of the day for the ladies who entered into the fun and
spirit of the occasion. Many members requested a repeat trip and it
was suggested that “Glorious Goodwood” was an idea for a future
outing. Summary kindly provided by Lesley Nicholls.
Café
Rene at the Rustic Fayre
Unfortunately
we had rain in the morning which resulted in many people delaying
their arrival until after lunch which affected our takings. The sun
showed its face in the afternoon and the day was overall enjoyable and
successful. Thanks to all who helped to erect the marquees, serve the
food, sell the tombola tickets, organise the tile mosaics for children
and carry out all the other many necessary tasks. Please keep the date
free in your diary for next August bank Holiday.
Trip
to Kew Gardens
Sadly
this had to be cancelled due to lack of firm bookings. Deposits have
been returned to all those who paid.

We have benefitted from some enjoyable events
and hope that some, if not all of the forthcoming events, will appeal to you.
Everyone will be made very welcome so please do not feel apprehensive about
attending alone.
We would like to congratulate 2 of our
committee members Sandra Grove and Susan Shaw. In May Sandra was made Mayor of
Verwood and Susan Deputy Mayor. Sandra has chosen 2 worthwhile charities to
support during her term. One is the Heritage Centre and the other is Dorset
Search Dogs. Sandra has organised some events, the proceeds of which will go to
the charities. Please contact Sandra for further details.
The Twinning Association, although
independent, benefits from support from Verwood Town Council.
A
Tribute to Bill Egglestone
The committee has some very sad news to pass
on. Bill Egglestone a former long term member passed away on 19 May 2015 which
we understand was a great shock for his family.
Bill served on the committee and was our
Membership Secretary for many years until he moved to Fordingbridge.
Bill is remembered for holding some
fun quiz evenings for the members with his classical music questions being
rather taxing if that genre of music was not familiar to you!
A private family funeral at the crematorium
was held for Bill with a celebration of life service at The Hub on Wednesday 3
June. We offer his family and friends our sincere condolences at this very
difficult time.

but our French guests will be coming on Ascension Day weekend which is from

expected to visit too.
Members’
Meetings
We were given a very
informative talk by “Totty” in March on bee keeping. Totty started
keeping bees after reading about the significant decline in the bee
population. Bee pollination of crops and plants is essential so the main
message is to please try and plant some flowers favoured by bees - look around
locally too see the plants that attract bees.
The April speaker
provided an extremely knowledgeable insight into the fauna and flora of Costa
Rica. This was accompanied by some spectacular photographs and details
of the speakers interesting and varied life.
The theme for the May
meeting was antiques which was an interesting evening with the speaker
providing insight into
how she became an auctioneer followed by
valuations in spite of the unprecedented power cut at the Heritage Centre.
Disco at the Memorial Hall
in April
We had an enjoyable evening with much
dancing. Thanks to Carol Geary for organising it.
Weekend trip to Keukenhof
Gardens in April
We stayed at the 4* Innhotel, Rotterdam
overlooking the canals and city, with plenty of restaurants, coffee shops and
bars nearby.
We enjoyed a full buffet breakfast with
champagne. The attractions included Harbour boat trips, the Euromast Tower,
museums & shopping. Some of our party took the coach to enjoy the day in
Amsterdam.
The highlight of the trip was the beautiful
Keukenhof Gardens with over 7 million tulips, daffodils and hyacinths plus
plant shows and the opportunity to take a boat trip to enjoy the bulb fields
surrounding the park. The weather was cold but the rain held off. Before
dinner that evening we joined Terry and Anjie in the bar to celebrate their 40th
wedding anniversary.
On the return journey we stopped at Citi
Europe for lunch and some last minute shopping. Our thanks to Terry for yet
again organising a wonderful weekend.

Newsletter
Update.
We
have decided to produce the newsletter in a new format and will distribute
it four times a year in March, June, September and December to keep
members up to date with events. We will continue with the reminder emails
but we do have members who do not use email.
We
propose that each committee member will telephone an allocated number of
members to remind them of events. Please contact Clive by telephone or
email (details below) if you would prefer not to receive any telephone
calls.
A
tribute to Brian Henry Bowey
- 20th Nov 1937 to 12th Feb 2015.
Most
of you will be aware of and saddened by the passing away of Brian Bowey,
a very popular and respected member of the Twinning Association. Brian
and Barbara became members many years ago and were both active and hard
working committee members. They remained on the committee until our last
meeting on 2nd February when they both resigned due to Brian’s
ill-health.
Brian
was the chairman at one time plus he helped out at many events. He
organised a variety of enjoyable trips over the years including his
signature Wareham boat trip; the last trip being the visit to Windsor
Castle in 2014. Our thoughts and sincere condolences are with his widow
Barbara and the rest of his family.

Past
Events
The
February meeting was entertaining with a magic show and talk by Paul
Hyland, a member of the Magic Circle. At the end of the evening there
were many mummers of “how did he do that”?
The
January meeting was interesting with a talk by Robin Cook on his
experiences working at Harrods in the late 50's, 60's and early 70's. We
had some insight into purchases by famous customers. Robin confirmed it
was just like “Are you being served?”.
There
were various excursions plus lunch in Les Pieds Bleus restaurant with
products from the nearby Cave aux Moines on the menu including snails
and mushrooms. There was, of course, much musical entertainment. Full
details of the trip are available on the website.
Organised
Visits
In
April a visit is being made to the Keukenhof in Holland to see the Bulb
fields. It is understood that this is now fully booked.
It
was hoped that our friends in Liederbach would have visited us in 2015
but unfortunately due their other committmments they had to decline. It
is hoped though that both Liederbach and Champtoceaux may be able to
visit us in 2016, but invites have yet to be issued.
