NEWSLETTER AUTUMN / WINTER 2016

The AGM last month was well attended and proved to be an enjoyable evening; thanks to Terry Bright for running a fun quiz. We would like to welcome our new members for the 2016 to 2017 membership year. Voting took place for the committee positions and we are pleased to announce that Clive Grove will continue to be our Chairman. Julie Blackwell-West is our new Vice Chair.

We lost some committee members due to various personal circumstances. Alec Nicholls (who was our Vice Chair) and Lesley Nicholls did not stand again; we would like to thank them for all the work they have undertaken for the catering at the annual Rustic Fayre. Ian Lucking did not renew his position; we are grateful to Ian for the sterling work he has done in organising the speakers for the members’ evenings over the last few years.

All other existing committee members were re-elected and their hard work over the last year is much appreciated. Welcome to our new committee member Debbie Scott. There are still some places left on the committee. We meet in the evening of the first Monday of each month so please do let Clive know if you would like to join us.

Forthcoming Events

Thursday Members’ meetings 7.30 p.m. at the Heritage Centre

  • 8 December – Members’ Christmas Party; entrance by ticket only so please bring it with you; cost £1 to include entertainment, wine, nibbles and a raffle for the door prize. We are making up a luxury hamper for the main raffle and donations will be gratefully accepted (please give to Julie).

  • 12 January - David Rogers will be enlightening us with his experiences as a police officer.

Remembrance Day Parade – Sun. 13 Nov. on Ferret Green at 10.45am.

Christmas Extravaganza – Saturday 10 December on Ferret Green:

  • This official switching on of the Christmas lights starts at 5pm and finishes at about 8pm. Our Association will be selling mulled wine and mince pies. Please do come along to support us.

Trip to Antwerp - 29 April until 1 May

  • If you would like to join this coach trip to Belgium please contact Terry Bright on 01202 822959.

Visit to our Twinned Town Liederbach – from about 16 to 19 June 2017.

  • We have been invited to Liederbach to celebrate 25 years of twinning between our towns. Places are limited so please let Julie know by the end of November if you would like to participate.

Visit to Champtoceaux – from about 15 to 17 September 2017.

  • An invitation has been received for us to visit Champtoceaux. Please contact Joyce Timpson on 01202 824469 if you would like to join us on this trip.

Previous Events

Members’ Meetings

  • The meetings were well attended, diverse and interesting. “Have Boots Will Travel” by Brian McIntyre was about his football experiences. Joy Whittingham enlightened us about the work of Dorset & Somerset Air Ambulance. Alistair Greener gave us a peep behind the scenes of a cruise ship.

  • “Undercover Agents” was the theme of the talk by Hazel Wilson.

Rustic Fayre

  • Thankfully this year the sun shone and Café Rene was a great success; as well as raising funds it was a fun day. We served delicious homemade cakes plus cheese and crackers, enjoyed with either a cuppa or a glass of wine. We had the usual wine tombola for adults and for the children mosaic tile making. Thank you to everyone who helped on the day.

Short Breaks Away

  • We had 2 successful trips following requests by members to visit places in England. In August Stuart Clifton kindly organised a trip to the National Memorial Arboretum and in October a weekend visit to Ilfracombe with 2 excursions was arranged by Julie Blackwell-West. We had positive feedback on both trips and had a high percentage of Twinning members join us.

Meeting in Berlin in October

We were invited to a meeting in Berlin in October and 4 committee members attended. The 4 self-funded the trip; our hosts generously treated the whole group to lovely meals at 2 restaurants and organised trips to places of interest including the Bundestag, the German parliament. Liederbach also had representatives from the other towns they are twinned with in France, Latvia and Poland. We had a meeting from 1pm until 6pm on Friday 14 October whereby we discussed how to strengthen our future European Twinning ties and ways to appeal to the younger generations. A full report was given at the AGM and is available if anyone would like a copy. Further information will be circulated by Clive in due course as we would like to try and implement some of the suggestions.

NEWSLETTER SUMMER 2016
http://twinning.verwood.org

We have had a busy year so far with many more events planned for 2016. The committee would like to thank everyone who hosted (our visitors from Champtoceaux in May) and helped make the weekend a success. Select here for a full report of the visit.

Susan Shaw was made Mayor in May, after Sandra Grove’s term came to an end, and is our new Honorary President. John Blackwell has retired from the committee due to work commitments but will continue to assist at all events including his sterling work selling tombola tickets at the Rustic Fayre.

Forthcoming Events

Members meetings are normally held on the 2nd Thursday of the month at the Heritage Centre commencing at 7.30 p.m.

  • 14 July – Brian McIntyre’s talk is entitled “Have Boots Will Travel”.
Are you intrigued? If so come along and find out what this is about.

  • There will not be a talk in August.

  • 8 September – Joy Whittingham will enlighten us about the work of Dorset Air Ambulance.

  • 13 October – Do you want to know what goes on behind the scenes of a cruise ship?
If so come and listen to Alistair Greener and he will spill the beans.

  • 10 November – listen very carefully as I will say this only once!
Undercover Agents is the theme of this talk by Hazel Wilson.

Rustic Fayre

The Twinning Association will have its usual Café Rene at the Rustic Fayre on Monday 29th August at Potterne Park. The fayre starts at 12 noon and finishes at 5pm.

Our committee works very hard on the day; arriving early to erect the gazebos and set up the tables, chairs and bunting. The food is prepared; tickets are sold for the tombola plus we offer mosaic tile making for children. We end the day by clearing away and dismantling the gazebos. Everyone is getting older and many are exhausted after a full day on their feet. So if you are able to offer any help on the day please let Clive know. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Please tell your family, friends and neighbours about Café Rene and ask if they will support us. We will be selling cheese & biscuits; wine; soft drinks; amazing homemade cakes plus tea and coffee. The Rustic Fayre is worth a visit as there are classic cars; various stalls; music; terrier racing and much more to keep you amused for the day. We look forward to seeing you there.

Visit by our Twinned Town Liederbach

Sadly this has been cancelled by our friends in Germany due to insufficient numbers making the travel arrangements too expensive. It is believed this was because there were many other events taking place in Leiderbach in 2016. We have been invited to Leiderbach from 16th to 19th June 2017 to celebrate 25 years of twinning between Verwood and Leiderbach. Further details to follow.

Short Breaks Away

Many members requested a weekend away in England this year rather than abroad and so we have arranged 2 trips. The first is to the National Memorial Arboretum from 31 July until 1st August being organised by Stuart Clifton. (This trip was enjoyed by all with letters of thanks being received by twinning - the comfort of the Highcliffe Coach was particularly noted.)

The second is to Ilfracombe, Devon from 1st October until 3rd October being organised by Julie Blackwell-West. There are places available for the Ilfracombe trip if anyone would like to join us. The cost is just £95 for 3 days including breakfast and evening meal plus a trip to Barnstaple. (The editor understands that some seats are still available.)

Previous Events

Members’ Meetings (normally on the 2nd Thursday of the month in the VHHC.)

All the talks were very interesting and made some enjoyable evenings. The talks included shipwrecks on the south coast; comedy writing; the flora and fauna of the Australian outback; plus the process of wood carving from beginning to end.

Quiz Evening

Terry Bright hosted a quiz evening on Friday 15 April to help raise funds for our organisation which was well attended and good fun. Thank you Terry and Anjie for your hard work.

Visit from Champtoceaux

An unusually large number of guests attended this year. In the region of 70 twinners and musicians arrived at the Heritage Centre on Thursday 5th May; luckily the weather was good so we were able to accommodate everyone! The evening was spent with hosts – friendships were renewed or made.

The tour of the RNLI on Friday proved a great success as did the meal at Italian Gossip restaurant. The food was lovely and the owners went out of their way to provide a convivial atmosphere.

Our guests spent Saturday daytime with hosts. This was followed by the soiree at the Memorial Hall which was a fun packed evening. It started with an impressive performance by the teachers who accompanied the young musicians and was followed by the usual high quality performance by Verwood Concert Brass. Next on stage were the young musicians. Our final entertainment was a barn dance which caused a lot of confusion, a lot of fun and a lot of laughs. It wasn’t just the language that contributed to the confusion but the wine kindly donated by our guests!

Another year has passed with memories of many interesting events and the anticipation of new ones to look forward to.

Visits by our Twinned Towns

Our friends from Champtoceaux will be arriving on Thursday 5 May and returning on Sunday 8 May (times to be confirmed). Please let Clive or Joyce know as soon as possible if you are able to host and join in the fun packed weekend. Friday will begin with a visit to the RNLI centre in Poole, followed by lunch at an Italian restaurant with a beautiful view over the marina. The Memorial Hall will be this year’s venue for the soiree on Saturday – polish your dancing shoes for some dosey doe-ing.

The second visit this year will be in September (dates to be confirmed) when we will be welcoming our friends from Liederbach.

A Short Break Away

Many members have requested a weekend away in England this year rather than abroad. The committee is looking into possible places to visit at an affordable price. Further information will be provided later but please feel free to contact any committee member with your suggestions.

Previous Events

Members’ Meetings

Mike Cranshaw entertained us with his kayaking adventure along the River Stour and his heart wrenching story about raising funds in memory of his nephew, a Royal Marine, killed in action. A beach hut at Hengistbury Head has been purchased and renovated for use by injured service personnel; a very worthwhile cause.

The talk on Concorde by Phil Holt kept the packed hall riveted. The story of Concorde is both fascinating and remarkable.

Award winning consultant ophthalmologist Dave Goldsmith devotes much of his time to a charity he set up to screen and provide eye surgery to patients in Bolivia and he kindly shared his experiences with us. Dave is a remarkable man tirelessly helping those in the remote areas of the Bolivian Amazon.

The Members’ Christmas Party was sadly poorly attended this year. The committee discussed this at the last meeting and it is believed it clashed with too many other events. The party will return to its usual Thursday evening this year.

AGM

The AGM was well attended and afterwards we were treated to a talk on the history of the Salvation Army by Captain Gia Salarishvili. Our long standing committee member Lyn Newman retired this year and she will be missed. Lyn has worked hard behind the scenes organising the catering at our various events. We would like to take the opportunity to again thank Lyn and wish her all the very best for the future.

We are pleased to announce that two new members joined the committee – Sheila Burgess and Pat Danes. We would like to thank Sheila and Pat for joining and wish them a warm welcome from the rest of the committee.

Brugge Christmas Markets

Despite the sickening events in Paris and the alerts in Brussels the trip to Brugge was not affected other than by some relatively minor travelling delays. The group enjoyed a stop at Coquelles for shopping and a visit to a chocolate factory. After arriving at the hotel, members of the party made their own way to the main square where the Christmas Market was in full swing. Some visited the Snow and Ice Sculpture Festival where all the walls and characters are carved out of ice. Thank you to Terry Bright for organising this trip and to Stuart Clifton for providing this summary.
(Select here for report and pictures.)

Extravaganza

This was well attended and we sold many cups of hot mulled wine to raise funds for our association. We would like to thank members who helped organise this and the Heritage Centre for their support.
